Generally there are two main aspects of search engine optimization that are of equal importance: on site optimization and off site optimization. Many SEO companies and Experts will tell you the onsite optimizations is not half as important as the off site but this is not true. If you do not have proper onsite optimization, search engines may not be able to read your website properly or understand what it is about, so therefore mark you down. Equally if you don't have many incoming links, then the search engines will not consider your website important enough to take the top places. So you need to concentrate on both aspects of SEO for your website to build its rankings.

This, as quite obvious from its name, is optimization of your website content and structure. This includes Header & Meta Tags, Keyword Density, Correct use of redirects and much more.
Normally onsite optimization is alot more complicated than off site which requires more manual labor.
These are probably the most important things to get correct. The title tag is the name you designate for the particular page. Your title need to include your keywords without being too long or keyword stuffed. Search Engines can tell when you are using obvious SEO techniques and may mark you down. It also need to be relevant for your visitor because this is what is displayed in on Search Engine Result Pages.
Many SEO experts now aggree that the major search engines are not using the Keyword meta tag anymore, although don't stop using them completely because they are quick, easy and free and could help with some of the lesser user engines. Description tags on the other hand are considered very important indeed. This is what SE normally show under the title tags in their result pages and their keyword density and length are very inportant in these.
There are varying views from SEO experts about using redirects on your website but it is normally considered that they wont hurt your ranking so should be used just in case. Did you know that http://www.yourwebsite.com is a different page to http://yourwebsite.com even though they display the same information. The reasons some believe that redirections are important is because of duplicate content. Search Engines mark you down if you have duplicate content in your website. So using redirection to redirect all without the www. aswell as even the pages with or without the trailing / could be of benefit to your rankings.
These are two web directories that are held with the highest regard amongst search engines. Mainly because they are human edited and only list what they see as the best and most relevant websites. Because of this getting a listing (particually on DMOZ) is not easy.
Yahoo cost $299 just to be considered and you have to pay $299 PA to keep your website listed. Even if they don't accept your website they will not refund you your first $299. Because it is paid it is normally considered easier to get a listing but has less SE juice than DMOZ. DMOZ is 100% free to join it is run by volunteers who check their sections websites. DMOZ gets many website submissions every day so it is not easy to get a listing in this prestigious directory.
In the past 2 way link exchanges or Reciprical Link exchanges were used to gain Search Engine Rankings but the Search engines caught onto this quite quickly because it was easy to spot and an obvious ploy to manipulate the search engines. Then came 3 way link exchanges. This is when you link to one website, that website links to another that the last website links back to you, gaining links and trying to trick the search engines yet again. Well unfortunately they also caught onto this as well and we have even tried up to 5 way links and these have also not been fruitful. Unfortunately as the Search Engines have evolved links exchanges are becomming less and less useful so we will need to find more ingenious ways of gaining links.
